THE HISTORY OF WAX

The Background of Wax Beginning in 1894, Barbour has a remarkably long and devoted history with waxed cotton. One may argue that, in the modern world, our relationship with this fabric for clothes is the oldest and most enduring. When John Barbour established J. Barbour & Sons in 1894, South Shields in the North East of England was a bustling port. The need for garments that would keep all the sailors, fisherman, river, dock, and shipyard employees dry was therefore high, according to Barbour. A method that can revitalise and prolong the life of your jacket for years costs just £38. Wax jackets by Barbour are...

HOW TO APPLY DRY WAX - 3 SIMPLE STEPS

What is Dry Wax? Beeswax and paraffin are combined to create Greenland Wax, which increases the fabric's water resistance, durability, and wind resistance. It works perfectly on jackets that have had no previous wax applied an on many different types of fabric. This includes; Poly-cotton, twill, canvas and 100% cotton material.  Barbour also produce a similar product, the Lightweight 40z Wax Bar which will work just as well. However we prefer to use Fjallraven's Greenland Wax on all our garments. Step 1 - Rub the Greenland Wax block against the fabric using long, fluid motions to leave a thin, even layer behind.   Step 2 - Using the corners of the Greenland block, work the wax into the seams and around the...
